I was a naive fool to be a human shield for Saddam.
A fine first-person account of a man who went to Iraq where the scales gradually fell from his eyes.
You know where else we have human shields who glow and glimmer in the light of their righteousness, and that is people who make a hobby out of serving as clinic escorts at abortion facilities. Peter Nixon of SursumCorda blogged on this back in January. I can't find the link right now but he said he did this at one point in his life and gradually realized that spending two minutes escorting a woman in a crisis pregnancy into an abortion clinic is not being a hero. Being there for her on many levels over time to support her pregnancy and the child...that's being a hero.
