Senator Boxer: Open mouth, insert foot.
Subtitled: "Unmitigated nonsense." Take Two.
*** SEE RESOLUTION and UPDATE AT END OF POST ***
I guess California Senator Barbara Boxer, quoted here in the online San Francisco Chronicle, hasn't seen what Ellen Goodman went through and what The Straight Dope confirmed in its research, saying, "...the claim that legalization [of abortion] has prevented the deaths of thousands upon thousands of women doesn't hold up."
My God, can this woman be any more shrill? She conveniently leaves out that the fact that for abortion to be totally criminalized again, not only does Roe v. Wade have to be overturned but also Doe v. Bolton and about 10 or so other Supreme Court decisions PLUS each of 50 states has to pass laws also abolishing legal abortion. So just the overturning of Roe doesn't shatter the earth like she portends it will.
Readers, perhaps it's time once again to help the good Senator see that she's effectivley touting the same urban myth that Ellen Goodman was forced to retract:
Senator Barbara Boxer, 112 HART SENATE OFFICE BUILDING, WASHINGTON DC 20510, (202) 224-3553. The webform for sending her email is here.
To sum up, Ellen Goodman had written: "After all, those of us who remember when birth control was illegal and when 10,000 American women a year died from illegal abortions don't have to imagine a world without choices."
Sen. Boxer said: "It [Roe's overturning] means a minimum of 5,000 women a year will die."
We pointed out that this claim of 5,000-10,000 maternal deaths from pre-Roe abortions was an urban myth, as outed by
- Dr. Christopher Tietze, a leading pro-abortion statistician for Planned Parenthood,
- NARAL Co-founder Dr. Bernard Nathanson,
- Dr. Andre Hellegers (before his death, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University), and
- The Centers for Disease Control
I suggest we supply Senator Boxer with these two links for her enlightenment:

(you'll have to copy both these lines directly above, one after the other, into your text, since leaving it intact screws up our sidebar at right) ...if she doesn't want to read some lowly bloggers' articles on the subject.
